D Driver Program
D Driver is Move Over Montana’s interactive student safety presentation highlighting the five most common causes of serious crashes, with a strong emphasis on drunk and distracted driving, along with drowsy, drugged, and dangerous decision-making behind the wheel.
Led by a veteran Montana fire service professional and EMT with over 30 years of experience, this 90-minute program uses real stories from rural highways and small communities to show students the real-world consequences of unsafe driving, without graphic images or videos.
The presentation also covers Montana’s Move Over Laws and features a powerful segment on seatbelts and airbags, helping young drivers make smarter choices before a single mistake becomes a lifelong tragedy.
Drunk Driver
Drunk driving is a serious and preventable problem that puts everyone on the road at risk. Alcohol impairs judgment, slows reaction time, and reduces coordination, making it far more likely that a driver will make deadly mistakes. Every year, drunk driving crashes lead to devastating injuries, loss of life, and lasting trauma for families and communities. Beyond the human cost, these incidents strain emergency responders, hospitals, and law enforcement, and often result in severe legal and financial consequences for the driver. Choosing to drive impaired isn’t just a personal risk, it’s a decision that endangers innocent lives and leaves impacts that can last forever.
Distracted Driver
Distracted driving is a growing problem that takes a driver’s attention off the road when it’s needed most. Whether it’s texting, adjusting a GPS, eating, or even talking to passengers, distractions slow reaction time and increase the chance of serious crashes. A few seconds of looking away can mean missing a stopped vehicle, a pedestrian, or an emergency responder on the roadside. Distracted driving causes thousands of preventable injuries and deaths each year, impacting families, first responders, and entire communities. Staying focused behind the wheel isn’t just smart, it’s a responsibility we all share to keep our roads safe.
Drowsy Driver
Drowsy driving is a dangerous and often overlooked problem that can be just as deadly as impaired driving. Fatigue slows reaction time, reduces attention, and can cause drivers to drift out of their lane or even fall asleep at the wheel. Long shifts, late nights, and long-distance travel all increase the risk, especially when drivers underestimate how tired they really are. Crashes caused by drowsy driving are often severe because there’s little to no attempt to brake or avoid impact. Choosing to drive while exhausted puts everyone on the road at risk and makes rest a critical part of road safety.
Drugged Driver
Drugged driving is a serious safety issue that occurs when drivers operate a vehicle while impaired by legal or illegal substances. Drugs, whether prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, marijuana, or illicit substances. This can affect judgment, coordination, reaction time, and decision-making. Many drivers underestimate how strongly these substances can impair their ability to drive, especially when mixed with alcohol. Drugged driving increases the risk of crashes, injuries, and fatalities, placing passengers, other motorists, and first responders in danger. Driving under the influence of drugs is preventable and carries severe legal, financial, and life-altering consequences.
Dangerous Driver
Dangerous driving includes reckless behaviors like speeding, aggressive driving, tailgating, and ignoring traffic laws, all of which put lives at risk. These actions reduce a driver’s ability to react to sudden changes and increase the severity of crashes when they occur. Dangerous driving creates unpredictable conditions on the road, endangering other motorists, pedestrians, cyclists, and roadside workers. Too often, impatience or overconfidence leads to decisions that result in serious injuries or fatalities. Safe driving means choosing caution, respect, and responsibility every time you get behind the wheel.
